Everton have signed forward Harry Calvert-Lewin and centre-back Samson Sibanda from Belgian side Leuven to bolster their defence.

Calvert-Lewin, who joined Everton in the summer after signing for French club Paris Saint-Germain, has impressed at Goodison Park with his pace and technical ability.

He scored twice as he helped Everton secure a 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday night.

Sibanda, who made his debut last season for Belgian side FC Twente, is another young talent who impressed with his skills.

He scored a hat-trick against Fulham and will add to the depth of the team.

The signings come just weeks before the end of the transfer window, which opens next month, and provide further boost to Everton's defence ahead of the new season.

Everton's defence was one of the league's weakest last season, but they have shown signs of improvement under manager Alex Ferguson this season.

They have been linked with moves to Manchester United and Arsenal, and while none of those clubs have shown much interest yet, Everton remain hopeful of making some progress this summer.

"We're looking to strengthen our defence and improve the quality of our team," said Ferguson.

"We've got a lot of players coming through the ranks and we want to give them the chance to develop."

Harry Calvert-Lewin and Samson Sibanda are expected to make their debuts soon, so the team can get ready for the new campaign.

It remains to be seen how long these signings will take to pay off, but it's clear that Everton are determined to make some changes to their defence if they hope to challenge for top-flight honours again in the future.
